Following a hugely enjoyable career in hospitality management, Stewart joined the driver training industry in 2008 and bought Caledonian LDT shortly afterwards.
“I trained to become a driving instructor with Caledonian LDT, and when the previous owner announced his retirement I didn’t want to see it taken over and re-branded. The vast majority of our instructors are trained in house, they’re all good friends, and I’m keen to help every single one of them improve and reach their goals while continuing to deliver brilliant training across all the areas in which we operate.
At the absolute core of what we do is the understanding that skills alone do not determine a good driver. Good driving is dependent on beliefs, emotions and motivations, and our coaching approach ensures that all driving instructors and learner drivers are exposed to this approach from early on in their training.”
- I hold the BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development, and I was an approved trainer for Tri-Coaching Partnership, and Driver Metrics.
- I have passed the DIA Special Test in driving ability.
- In April 2016 I completed a two-day course at Cranfield University on Driver Psychology and Behaviour, facilitated by Dr Lisa Dorn and Dr Mark Sullman.
- In April 2017, Caledonian became a limited company (Caledonian Driver Training Limited), continuing to trade as Caledonian LDT. The driving school remains a family-owned business.
- In June 2017 I joined the Governing Committee of the ADINJC, a non-profit organisation representing the views and concerns of its thousands of ADI members across the UK.
- In 2018, I was invited by Tri-Coaching Partnership to deliver their flagship BTEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development to ADIs in Scotland.
- In January 2019, I passed my Standards Check with a Grade A, scoring 48 points out of 51.
- Also in 2019, I became the Scottish Ambassador of the ADINJC.
- In 2019-2020, I designed, wrote, and recorded the Caledonian ADI Masterclass for PDIs and ADIs.
- In 2020, Caledonian became an employer, hiring an Office/HR Manager and a full-time driving instructor
- In 2022 I became the Head of Engagement of the ADINJC, charged with raising awareness of the Association among PDIs and helping to increase value for members
- In 2023, I will earn my Level 5 ILM Diploma in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, a course accredited by the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).
