Who are you and what do you do?
Hello there, I'm Steven, looking forward to meeting you. I became a fully qualified instructor in the year 2000 and have been loving it ever since. Best thing I have ever done!
When I was a young lad, I worked for a TV repair company, then worked for a jewellery company making up the orders and shipping them out. Both were good jobs and the guys I worked with were great, but have to say nothing beats being a driving instructor. Nowadays I just can't imagine not being one.
The reason I chose to join Caledonian? Their reputation of course. The training that the driving instructors receive is second to none. All done in a really friendly manner, and of course that excellent training is ultimately going to benefit our pupils.
What is the best thing about being a driving instructor?
Where do I start? I could say being out and about, whether in towns or nice country roads. Meeting all sorts of interesting people from all walks of life. Being self-employed, as there is no boss barking orders (yup, been there, worn the t-shirt). Ultimately though it's going the journey side-by-side with the pupil. From the nervous stages, watching their confidence and skills grow. Helping with solutions and answers to any problems or questions they have. And of course, at the end of the journey seeing the pupil receive their pass certificate and how delighted they are. Can't get better job satisfaction than that!
What is the best advice you could give your learners?
As with learning anything, there will be parts of learning to drive that will seem more difficult than others. Every pupil has their own hurdles to get over. Try and avoid getting frustrated, just keep calm, relax and with a bit of practice, you'll get there. And remember I'll be there helping to guide you through it every step of the way.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
I love to cook. Finding new recipes and giving them a go. I'm great at it! Even my smoke alarm cheers me along! Also a big fan of console games. Started waaaay back with a Sinclair ZX81 all the way up to the Xbox series X. And yes, whatever is coming out next I'll be first in the queue.
One interesting fact about you...
Got both a flying lesson and skid pan training for my birthday one time. So yeah, can skid planes and fly cars like nobody's business!
