Who are you and what do you do?
Hi, I’m Sharon a trainee driving instructor with Caledonian.Â
I always wanted to become a driving instructor and decided to go for it last year after being made redundant. Caledonian was highly recommended by an ADI friend and has been the right choice for training and support.Â
My previous career was in IT management within the education sector. Throughout my career, I worked closely with all kinds of people, managed teams of engineers and supported young apprentices as they developed their skills and confidence.
Coaching and helping others learn have always been a big part of what I do. I have extensive experience in delivering training, developing customer service skills and adapting my approach to suit different people and learning styles.
Outside of work, I volunteer as a Girlguiding leader, which has further developed my people skills, communication, leadership and mentoring skills.
I’m now bringing all this experience into driver training, where I can combine my passion for helping people with my coaching skills to support learners in becoming safe, confident and independent drivers. For me, it’s about more than passing a driving test — it’s about building confidence, developing lifelong skills and helping people enjoy the freedom that safe driving brings.

What is the best thing about being a driving instructor?
The best thing about being a driving instructor is seeing someone grow in confidence and achieve something they may have once thought was beyond them. I love coaching people, helping them overcome their nerves and watching them develop into safe, independent drivers. For me, there's nothing more rewarding than knowing you've helped someone gain not just driving skills, but also confidence, freedom and independence.
I'm not just teaching people to drive; I'm helping them discover what they're capable of.
Â
What is the best advice you could give your learners?
Mistakes are part of learning. What matters is understanding what happened, learning from it and trying again. You don't need to be perfect to make progress. Confidence comes from practice, not perfection
Learning to drive is about developing safe habits, confidence and independence — not just passing a test.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
I love spending time with my husband and family. My niece and nephew are the apple of our eye. We go skating, swimming and play pickleball with them. I love to sew, knit and bake too.
One interesting fact about you...
I am a rollercoaster addict. My favourite ride is Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Ohio. I have annual pass for a famous Orlando theme park, so I get to ride more of my favourite coasters as much as possible when we travel to the US.
