Learning to drive in Scotland
Take the best route to learning to drive: just follow the eight steps set out below.
1. Apply for your provisional driving licence

2. Choose your Caledonian LDT driving instructor

3. Take your practical driving lessons
Your instructor will provide a structured training course and progress monitor. You will be guided through the complete DSA Learn to Drive syllabus. By the end of your training you will have a better understanding of all the skills to be tested, and will feel confident when you are presented for test.
4. Study at the same time for your theory and hazard perception test
Your instructor will provide Theory and Hazard Perception books and DVDs for you to study. These are published by the DSA and we offer these at a discount from published prices. By the end of our Theory and Hazard Perception course, you will have a better understanding of all the points to be tested and will feel confident when you go for test at your local DSA Theory Test Centre.
5. Take and pass the DSA theory and hazard perception test

There are 50 questions in the Theory Test. The pass mark is 43 questions answered correctly out of 50.
6. Take and pass the DSA practical driving test
This should be arranged with your instructor, who will go with you to the Driving Test Centre for your test. Your instructor will provide you with a unique reference that you will need when applying for your test, which will ensure that your instructor and the car in which you took your lessons are both available for your appointed test time.

7. Apply for your full driving licence
The DSA Examiner will provide you with a report on the Driving Test that he conducted with you. If you passed, he will provide a certificate that you must send (together with your Theory Test Pass Certificate) to the DVLA to be issued with your full UK Driving Licence.
8. Arrange a Pass Plus course and benefit from major insurance discounts
All Caledonian LDT instructors are registered to deliver Pass Plus courses for the newly qualified driver.
The Pass Plus syllabus includes motorway driving, bad weather driving, night-time driving, country roads etc. The course usually takes 6 to 10 hours. On satisfactory completion, you will earn a certificate that entitles you to a discount from many major insurers (depending on your circumstances and car ownership).
All Caledonian LDT instructors are registered to conduct the Pass Plus test.
