Driving instructor training
If you take pride in your driving and you are good with people, you could train to become a driving instructor. Caledonian Learner Driver Training is an ORDIT qualified training establishment. Read on to learn about our instructor training, and if you are interested, then submit an application to us.
The Caledonian Driving Instructor Training Course is a top quality, fully accredited product which has been developed by highly qualified and experienced ADI Trainers who are also ORDIT registered. (The Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers – run by the DSA)
All the materials – study manuals and reference books, CD-ROMs and DVDs – are endorsed by either or both the Driving Standards Agency and The Driving Instructors Association. These organisations lead our profession and set the strict standards of training and subsequent operation of all Approved Driving Instructors.
The qualifying Examination to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor is split into three parts. We refer to them as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. Each must be passed before you can move onto the next. We concentrate on each Part before training on the next, although we often overlap a couple of hours. This way, as you study Theory and Hazard Perception, you will have a Driving assessment (for Part 2) that may identify habits or techniques that you can work on in the meantime – as you drive in your daily life.
Our Training Course is structured and tailored to fit around your commitments to work and family life. The Course can be delivered in various areas around Scotland. It runs at your pace, locally. It is a complete package from start to finish and normally takes between 6 and 9 months to complete, although it can be completed in less time, depending on your available time. We will keep up with you. This is your new career – we will not rush or skimp – after all you will be working with us later (if you accept our genuine Career Opportunity).
Part One – Driving theory and hazard perception
This examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions on various subjects including The Highway Code, Traffic signs and signals, car control, basic mechanical questions, instructional techniques, the law, teaching people with disabilities and questions on the driving test. There is also a hazard perception test which is conducted at this time following a short break. This is a virtual drive on the computer where you have to recognise various hazards which are developing and you are required to identify these. This test is available in Theory Test Centres throughout the UK. Tests can be booked online for either weekdays or Saturdays (depending on demand).

Part Two – Your driving ability
This is a 1 hour practical test of your driving skills. It is a benchmark for what you will teach later. A commentary is not required, just good, safe and systematic driving. You will also demonstrate various manoeuvres – all the ones you will later teach to a pupil. The main difference between your Part 2 test and a pupil’s driving test is that you will be expected to perform to a higher level – a maximum of six minor errors. Our qualified, experienced trainers will lead you through the full DSA syllabus, and by the end of this section of our training course you will feel confident in taking the test. These Part 2 tests are conducted at various Driving Test Centres throughout the UK. Booking facilities are available online.
Part Three – Your ability to teach
This is a 1 hour practical test of your teaching skills. The examiner plays the role of a pupil and marks you on how you teach a particular topic. There will be two topics within the hour, one will require to be taught as a beginner or partly trained pupil, and the other at a more advanced stage – either as a pupil within a couple of weeks of a driving test or a qualified driver undertaking a driver development course. Our experienced trainers will teach and guide you through all the competencies which you require to show on the test. Above all, the examiner is looking for you to come across as friendly, patient, knowledgeable and understanding whilst achieving your aims within the lesson.
Trainee licence
In some instances it may be prudent to obtain a Trainee Licence. This is a government scheme that allows you to teach the public once you have passed parts one and two tests and have received a minimum of 40 hours part three preparation. Your training continues and you are then expected to take and pass the Part 3 test during the 6 month duration of this Licence. The DSA require that you be sponsored by a driving school as a trainee instructor, and also that you must receive all the training before you will be allowed to teach pupils.
Clearly this will not suit everyone as most students will be ready to sit the Part 3 test around the same time as the criteria for the trainee licence have been met. However, it is an option which we are able to provide if you so choose.
Remember that we have a vested interest in your success. We only train the people whom we want in our Driving School. If we have trained you, a place has been reserved for you.

ORDIT registered
Official Register of Driving Instructor Training
ORDIT was set up by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA, the Government body that controls and regulates driving instruction in the UK) with the support of the major driving schools and trade associations.
The purpose of ORDIT is to protect the public from substandard instructor training, misleading marketing/selling and other unethical business practice. ORDIT is chaired and managed by the DSA and members failing to maintain the required standard may be removed (or feel compelled to resign) from ORDIT.
Caledonian Learner Driver Training embraces these principles and, together with all our ORDIT qualified trainers, is proud to hold full membership status. We therefore guarantee you will receive the highest quality of instructor training with Caledonian Driving Instructor Training.
There are many training organisations in the UK, but not all of them use ORDIT registered trainers.
Most of them present a glossy image, but very few will deliver the quality and standard of training that is needed to become a professional driving instructor.
Caledonian Learner Driver Training is fully listed in entry 0314 of the ORDIT Register
